Dear IVCMS Community,
Welcome back to a new school year! We are excited to begin another chapter of learning, growth, and community with you and your children.
As part of our ongoing commitment to cultivating safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environments, we are continuing the implementation of our N-word Initiative. This is a part of our Strategic Goal 2, Accessible and Equitable Support for Students. We began this initiative last year with updates to our Nondiscrimination/Harassment/Anti-Racism Policy and our Board Resolution on the use of the N-word. The N word is strictly prohibited on all school campuses. This initiative reflects our district values of dignity, equity, and belonging for all students.
Throughout the year, schools will be monitoring and collecting data on the use of hate language, including the N-word, to better understand and address harmful behaviors. Families can expect to receive a periodic Community Check-In Letter, like this one, to keep them informed and engaged in this important work.
If a student uses the N-word at school, the school response may include restorative conversations, parent meetings, or disciplinary actions, including suspension, depending on the context and severity of the incident.
Similar to last year, all elementary school students will sign a Student Pledge, which is tailored to their grade levels, focusing on respect and inclusion in an age-appropriate manner. This pledge will help them understand the importance of positive language and behavior and will be signed in class.
For our middle and high school students, we have developed a Student Agreement that emphasizes respect, responsibility, and the importance of using language that supports our diverse community. This agreement outlines student expectations and their role in maintaining a safe and respectful school climate.
We ask that all of our families support this initiative by discussing the expectations with your student, and signing and returning the N word Contract .This district-wide initiative is an integral part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that our community thrives together.
If your student or family needs support in understanding or navigating this initiative, please contact an IVC administrator or reach out to Zetha Nobles, Director of Equity, Access, and Achievement, znobles@nhusd.k12.ca.us for assistance.
Together, we are working to ensure that every student feels seen, valued, and safe.
With appreciation,
